About loop hero and inversion

Loop hero is an interesting game in itself, but that’s not what we will talk about today.

What’s interesting about Loop Hero is how it takes a genre trope, puts it on its head and then dances with it Cancan.

It’s a very interesting way how to think about creating original game mechanics.

For a brief overview: In Loop Hero you don’t control the main character, you control everything around him.

You will be dealt bunch of cards during the game and you can place those cards on different parts of the map.
For example, if you place a mountain down it will boost main characters HP. Tree boosts attack speed or you can place monster spawners and change MCs gear, but you never ever control the character directly.

There is a lot more interesting synergies that come from Loop Hero, but that’s for another day ;).

I think Loop Hero is potential answer to a question: “What would Idle rogue-like game look like if you couldn’t control your character?”

Isn’t that fascinating?

This seems like a very interesting approach to designing games. Let’s take any other genre, pick trope and invert it.

What would COD look like without guns?

What if you controlled monsters in Hades?

What if you had MOBA where two teams are forced to cooperate and can’t fight?

What about The Sims like game where you are trying to kill the character?

JustDance where music is generated from your movement.

Strategy game without a map?

You probably get my point now. 😉 I think this sort of brainstorming could lead to a very interesting results. I hope I will see other cool games like Loop Hero.
