Tutorials to learn Game Development? Probably not…

So, you wanna make games?

Great!

How are you gonna go about it? YouTube? Yeah about that…
It’s probably a bad idea, let me explain why I think that.

Let me introduce myself first, no need for you to trust some rando on the internet.
My name is Vojta and I have been working as Game Dev for past 6 years and teaching at GameReady programming and game development for close to 2 years. I am officially authorized by Epic to teach Unreal. I have also made over 300 tutorial videos on learning 3D and UE.

I am not telling you just to flex, but so you understand I am talking about stuff I know a lot about. I have taught myself UE and GameDev and I have done so with others.

So to answer the question from the start: Neah, don’t bother.

That’s a gist of it, but I understand that won’t help you to understand why, so let me first ask you a question.

What’s the best way for you to learn something?

You specifically, how do you learn best?

The answer whether you should watch tutorials or not depends on that. Are you a magic unicorn that remembers exactly what you watched? If so, maybe tutorials are for you.

Chances are… that’s not the case.

I think, that somewhat casual definition of learning is as follows:

Learning comes from attempting action and getting a feedback of success or failure.
-> If you succeed, you move onto more difficult action.
-> If you fail, you analyze what went wrong and attempt again.

This loop of feedback leads to learning and gaining knowledge.

Are you starting to see the issue I have with tutorials?

Where exactly are we failing when we follow step by step tutorials? It’s not learning, it’s monkey see, monkey do.
We don’t learn like this, we just repeat something that we saw smarter monkey do on the video.

It’s very inefficient way to learn. Watching tutorials is easy. Doing the work is hard, but you need to do the work to get better.

You need to fail to learn. If you don’t fail you never learn and tutorials never let you fail.

Try things yourself. Do small projects, experiment, fail and succeed. That’s the best way to go about it. Probably the most painful one, but the only one where you actually learn.

PS: If you are looking for help and mentorship on your journey, hit me up: fansi@kampairaptor.com.

We have limited amount of students we accept at GameReady, but it may be just for you.

You can do it yourself tho! Mentorship is for people who want to ride a spaceship instead of a car. Good luck!

PPS: If you wanna read more about how I would go about learning UE if I did it again, here you go
